For Jimmy and Splosh
This poem is to thank you for your friendship and for sharing your courage and your journey with me and Maisie, I hope you like it.
(I got you a tuner for your guitar Jim, so you’d be able to tune it up when you played but I didn’t get the chance to see you to give it to you, it’s at home now amongst my precious things so you can use it now any time when you’re playing.
Maisie says hello)
With best wishes and all our love, Adrian and Maisie the dog
“Blackbird”
Wake up early
And the Blackbird sings his song
Blackbird singing in the early morning sun
My friend lay down
Now he’s laid across the ground
Another soldier on the road
Another soldier gone
Blackbird singing in the early morning sun
So My friend lay down
Now My Friend is gone
Another soldier dead and gone
Wake up early
Can you hear the Blackbird singing
Singing
Blackbird singing in the early morning sun
Sometimes you take the hit
Sometimes you run
It’s hard to know what to choose
When every day you get the same old blues
Sometimes you take the hit sometimes you run
Another soldier down
Another soldier dead and gone
Another body lying on the ground
Short of time
Short of luck
Another soldier gone
Another soldier lying in the early morning sun
Blackbird singing
Grass covered in dew
Blackbird singing in the early morning sun
Blackbird singing in the early morning sun
Dew on the grass
And the day has just begun
Goodbye Jimmy
Goodbye son
The longest road of all is sometimes the shortest walk to take
Jimmy hold my hand
Jimmy hold my hand
Jimmy hold my hand
When I get there
I hope you’re there to hold the gate
My friend who sat upon the ground
To dream of all the things
He hadn’t found
That could not wait
They’re not waiting now
They’re not waiting now
Wake up Jimmy wake up
You made it just in time
Just in time
Hold the gate Jimmy hold the gate
The Blackbird’s sung the morning into day
Now it’s time
There’s no need to walk away
